My Rating (out of 5)
⭐⭐

A paranormal thriller with a high action feel.

Kennedy, for the most part is a typical teen girl. She loves her mom, and her cat Elvis. She doesn't believe in ghosts of course, until one day looking for Elvis she sees one.

She is still trying to explain away what she actually saw, when shortly after that, Kennedy finds her mother dead. Heartbroken and forced to choose between living with an aunt who is a stranger and boarding school, she packs up her room and settles in for the last night in her home, only to be wakened by a spirit trying to kill her, followed immediately by twins Jared and Lukas breaking into her house and room to save her.

This is how Kennedy learns that ghosts are real, her mother might not have died of heart failure, and there are dark and powerful forces at work. Is she really destined to be part of a secret society whose mission is to contain those forces? Her survival and that of the world as we know it, might depend on it.

This was a good YA paranormal fantasy.  A little dark, a little twisted, some ghosts, some heroes, a sprinkling of teen angst and romance, and a good deal of action. The story itself is imaginative, and original.

Alas, in looking into the remainder of the series, I have learned that it remains unfinished - there are a number of former fans of this series on Goodreads bemoaning the fact that there has been no movement on completing the series since the second book - Unmarked was published in 2014. Since I feel there is no conclusion to be had at this point, regardless of whether I stop now or after the second book, I will not be making an effort to continue a series that remains unfinished after 5 years. I wish I had realized that before I got into this story - I honestly would not have bothered. Since there is no actual conclusion to be had and no further instalments in 5 years time, my star rating was adjusted somewhat to reflect the lack of conclusion. A shame really because the writing and the story had potential to entertain.

The audiobook was narrated by Candice Accola, who performed with a pleasant tone and cadence and portrayed the characters with appropriate emotional response.

Happy Reading,
Christine
