Summer camp. A chance for kids to get into the great outdoors. What could be grander for a city kid?
For Emma, it did start out grand. She was placed in "Dogwood' cabin with Vivian, Allison, and Natalie. They were all older than her, but Vivian quickly took her under wing.and took on the role of "camp big sister". Days were spent learning archery and swimming, and evenings were for campfires and playing "Two Truths and a Lie. Emma never feels left out - until one night when the other girls snuck out and left her behind saying she was too young. They never came back, and were never found. The camp is closed in the wake of the tragedy.
Almost fifteen years later, Emma is an artist, still tortured by the disappearance of the girls. One day, the wealthy owner of the camp finds her and tells her she is re-opening the camp after all that time, and asks her to consider coming on as staff. Hoping to exorcise her demons, Emma agrees. Assigned to the very cabin she was in all those years before, she is soon chasing a fifteen year old trail of breadcrumbs trying to figure out the dark history of Camp Nightingale and what happened to her missing friends.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It grabbed my attention early on with a certain eerieness, and held my interest right to the end.
Narration was top knotch, with Zanzarella providing good range from snarky teen to aging socialite and everything in between.
Happy Reading,
Christine
