My Rating (out of 5)
⭐⭐⭐⭐

While King is known primarily as a writer of horror stories, he is quite capable of writing something poignant and touching as well.  It is often easy to forget he has written stories like RITA HAYWORTH AND THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE.  This was not his best work, but it was good nonetheless.

Scott Carey's neighbors have a restaurant that is failing due to the prejudices and attitues of the people who live in the town, and a dog who likes to leave its droppings on Scott's lawn. At the beginning of the story, these neighbors are not getting along all that well.

Scott has a strange affliction.  He is losing weight rapidly - not that you would know that to look at him.  He looks the same, he hasn't had to cinch his belt, and yet his scale is telling him that he is losing weight at an alarming rate. While that may be strange enough in itself, what is really strange is that his weight is not affected by his clothes at all.

Eventually Scott hass to face facts.  He cannot survive growing lighter and lighter. With his demise likely, a little introspection has him trying to make peace with himself and the world around him.  He decides to try and help his neighbors. His help is not immediately welcome, but in time they do get past their differences and a great bond of friendship forms.

It is important to remember that this is a novella and not a novel.  If you are looking for something to entertain you for more than a few hours, this is not it..  as Hook/Opening

There is a bonus short story on the audiobook bersion - but if you choose a print or e-book edition, not to worry - it is available on King's website as a freebie!  A sweet story of a man who while mourning the loss of his wife, finds himself grudgingly responsible for a puppy and finding purpose and companionship.

If you are looking for one of King's trademark, nighmare inducing horror stories you may be disappointed.  I for one, prefer it when he writes the kind of stories that speak to my humanity.

King narrated these stories himself, and he does a fine job of it. I was actually surprised at how well his narration was.

Happy Reading,
Christine
